Enjoying the note you’re on

Psychology of Performance workshops are open to performers of all levels and mediums to assist in reaching your creative potential. Gain the unique perspective of a seasoned performer and professional therapist. I make myself available as both a therapist and musical coach as a way to support participants in identifying psychological blocks, offering particular ways of managing the issues emotionally and musically. Workshops are limited to ten participants and are conducted in a supportive environment where people can allow themselves to expand their ways of preparing for public performance, auditions, and competitions, or simply for the pleasure of their own playing.
Available in Portland, or elsewhere upon arrangement.
Workshop formats:
- One four-hour session, complete.
- Two three-hour sessions given in one day.
- Two-day weekend retreats.
Weekend retreat description
Weekend retreats are designed to focus on the psychology of performance in general, and in particular, to each individual group member’s goals and desires. Offered every weekend in October, and throughout the year.

Comments from Workshop Participants
I had the pleasure of attending Fred Korman’s workshops at the Las Vegas Music Festival. His warmth and sincerity immediately put all the participants at ease to openly discuss and explore their inner worlds as musicians and human beings. He is a true artist, not only on the oboe, but also in crafting an effective, non-threatening atmosphere where performers can benefit from self-awareness, and sharing common experiences.

Fred brings his natural insight, intellect, and caring to everything he does. His performance seminars at the Las Vegas Music Festival are some of the most well-attended events each summer. His own performances are as poignant musically as his seminars are psychologically — and both inspire.

In his psychology of performance workshop, Fred creates a supportive environment where students can identify the psychological impediments to better public performance. With his gentle and non-threatening demeanor, he helps to guide students to areas where they can begin to work with their fears, thus becoming more successful in live performance and auditions/competitions.

Fred Korman truly understands his audience. He has a unique ability to engage and lead as only a gifted performer and professional counselor can. Invaluable insights are delivered in a comfortable and nurturing milieu. His seminar invokes visceral responses that fortify artistic courage. Attitudes and perspectives change enabling attendees to take their performances to the next level.

While there are many therapists to choose from, what makes Fred unique and brilliant is that he's been in the hot seat as a professional musician. Unlike some therapists who appreciate but don't perform music professionally, he's lived the fear, the very real pressures and high standards, and is able to take you, both practically and spiritually, to a more powerful and joyful place. His therapeutic skills come as much from core experience as training — he's fluid, intuitive, rigorous and authentic. He's honest, personal, not afraid to be unconventional, yet very respectful of boundaries and meeting clients where they are.

Through Fred's commitment to active listening, courageous sharing of his life experience, and helping me to find solutions, I feel safe and supported. He has created a safe place free of any judgment. He is always there to completely believe in me. As a fellow member of the performing arts community, I feel Fred has the ears and heart to really hear and understand my point of view. Having a good friend in this performers' world is a rare blessing when struggling with life's ups and downs.
